Call me Hermana Christensen

It's about time I let my feelings about my mission call be seen outside the pages of my journal.

Dear Sister Christensen:

You are hereby called to serve as a missionary of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. You are assigned to labor in the Arizona Scottsdale Mission. It is anticipated that you will serve for a period of 18 months.

You should report to the Mexico Missionary Training Center on Wednesday, August 7, 2013. You will prepare to preach the gospel in the Spanish language.

As I read these words for the very first time, I remember feeling so numb. I couldn't pick apart exactly how I was feeling, somewhere along the lines of being overwhelmed.  Even as I prayed that very first night, I felt like a different person during my prayer.  I can't describe it!!

Anyways, the next day, Saturday March 30, 2013, I played two soccer games. In between those games I was able to read over my mission packet with my father and I logged into my mission portal online.  I was exploring and came across a little paragraph about Arizona's state history. I was reading it out loud to my dad and randomly started crying at the most random fact.
 Here's what I was reading:

USA-Arizona
Some of the first members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Arizona marched with the Mormon Battalion, a group of Latter-day Saints preparing to fight in the Mexican-American War, in the winter of 1846-47. Other members arrived in 1873, sent from Utah to colonize the area. More settlers in 1876 built a fort, dug canals, built dams, and struggled to adjust to the dry land. During the exodus from Mexico in 1912, Arizona became a place of refuge for many Mexican Latter-day Saints.
In 1973, a long-time resident of Thatcher, Arizona, Spencer W. Kimball, became the Church's twelfth President. He served until his death in 1985. The Church is also known in Arizona for its temple located in Mesa. Many community members visit the temple grounds every December to see the Christmas lights. Since 1938, Church members have presented an annual Easter pageant on the temple grounds. The performance, "Jesus the Christ," has attracted approximately 80,000 people each year.

As soon as I read "Many community members visit the temple grounds every December to see the Christmas lights" I couldn't read on.  I felt an overpowering love for the State of Arizona at that moment.  Very random, but I know Heavenly Father was helping me realize the significance of my call.  Weeks before I turned in my papers/received my call I prayed earnestly to know that my mission call would be specifically for me, from Him.  I didn't care where I was assigned to serve, all I pleaded for was to know the Divinity of my call. I am so humbled to know that I am supposed to be serving the Lord as a missionary in the State of Arizona in the Spanish language.

I am SO BEYOND EXCITED to be speaking Spanish!! I have downloaded numerous apps on my iPad to help me re-learn the language. My favorite is the Spanish sing along hymns.. Cantemos los himnos!! I have learned many words, I love it. I also prayed in Spanish for the first time last night right before bed to Krissy.  I read off of a card that I made, and realized after that I accidentally blessed the food. Haha whoops, it will get more sincere soon enough.  I cannot even wait to FINALLY be fluent in the language.  I know it will be super hard and frustrating, but I am so excited to talk to and love the Hispanic population of Arizona. Haha, I see Hispanics around town and cannot help but grin widely at them.  Love the people already.  I know that I knew some of those people in Arizona very well in the pre-earth life and cannot wait to reunite with them!

I also have felt love from my mission President and his wife.  I truly know they have prayed for me.  I cannot wait to meet them!!

Soy una hija de Dios :)

I go to college

I learn every now and then...

There is one thing that I have found I enjoy.  I enjoy writing. Maybe it is only cause a few teachers have expressed their appreciation for my writing, but the good grades and comments on my papers make me feel great!  I have always been above average in my writing skills and am now starting to appreciate and acknowledge my abilities.  I do realize I am not incredible or bound to be an author or anything like that, but simply that I am not scientifically or mathematically minded. I enjoy expressing my thoughts and opinions in assignments.  I would much rather write an essay than calculate an equation (Kassidy). Kass, I have decided however that I want you to help me in heaven as I obtain higher education in math and chemistry and those gross subjects.  If you're willing :)...

I know after my mission as I start attending school again I will be kicking myself for putting off all of my math and science classes. But hey, i'll cross that bridge when it comes.  What I wanted to share  tonight- I am proud to announce I made an outline before I wrote my paper!  Who says I can't think critically? This 2 pages of notes was just for fun, I am actually learning to write!
Also- thank you spectrum program for teaching me vocabulary words. I love vocabulary, spelling, and grammar.  These are the things that interest me. LANGUAGE ROCKS.
Also- I regret not taking AP English in high school so Tad and Trevor please take it for me!
Also- I just read King of the World by David Remnick and can muster up many things to say about Cassius Clay, or Muhammad Ali, if anyone is interested.
That is all for now :)

Capture the Moment

I can't help but compare Krissy in this top picture to the werewolf from Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.  Her hunched back, drooping hand and solemn look just put me over the edge.  We ended the night's series on this one due to uncontrollable laughter.

When life is moving in its never ceasing motion, stress tends to build up on an individual.  Especially while attending college.  What better relief is there than laughter? I have come to admire my friend Krissy.  There is a reason we both attended Dixie State together.  Although I am not fully aware of that reason yet, I am loving the journey in finding it out.  We are two peas in a pod. We try to take Photobooth pictures everyday just to remember this exciting time in our lives. We can never make it through without laughing :) I had to share at least one from tonight! Live, laugh, love!

Be Drunk

Charles Baudelaire's poem "Be Drunk” states that the only way to live is to, as the title states, be drunk.   To be drunk is to be with passion.  Living a life full of meaning, striving each day to do something purposeful.  Is it important to be drunk? Can being 'drunk' actually have positive connotations? Yes it is important to get lost in something you find gives purpose and meaning to your life.  We all live lives full of possibilities.  It all comes down to acting instead of just talking.  Most people can figure out what they want their life to be.  Of course it's easy to look at somebody else's life and wish for yours to resemble that.  Take the initiative and work for what you desire.  Instead of admiring from a far, be proactive. Look to make positive changes in your life.  Charles Baudelaire makes the point to not just be drunk at times, but continually.  Be incessantly lost in a work.

I like to think that I am continually drunk.  Learning about the LDS church and reading The Book of Mormon is what I consider myself to be drunk on right now.  It’s a bit contradictory, that I am ‘drunk’ on the gospel of Jesus Christ.  It’s true however; I am slowly and surely becoming addicted to what makes me most happy.  Why complete the task of reading your scriptures halfheartedly, when you can get lost in the words and find answers to your prayers?
I believe that as long as one is continually striving to be drunk on something, those positive habitual efforts will result in happiness and success.
